Department 150L takes part in the Open Day again in 2026 [23.07.26]
At the Open Day on 4 July 2026, the Department of Food Informatics presented its work. Doctoral researchers gave visitors an insight into their current projects, showing how sensors, data acquisition and machine learning interact in food production.
The topics ranged from digital twins for production processes and the reduction of food waste to computer vision for quality control and monitoring along the food chain. In conversation with visitors, the doctoral researchers explained where their methods are applied in practice.
The demonstrations proved especially popular with younger guests. As in previous years, a sensor-equipped Lego robot performed an action whenever it detected an obstacle. An image recognition model that identifies different types of sweets demonstrated how machine learning can be used for classification. A multispectrometer from an ongoing project rounded off the display, showing how quality attributes can be captured without destructive measurements.
Also on show was the S-TEC centre "The Biointelligence Engine", in which the University of Hohenheim works with companies together with the University of Stuttgart and the Fraunhofer Institutes IPA and IGB — from short Quick Checks through Exploring Projects to Feasibility Studies as the longest format. The aim is to work out with companies where biointelligent solutions can make their processes more efficient and sustainable.
