Research-based teaching at Dep. 150L: Participation in Humboldt reloaded  [08.10.21]

The Department of Food Informatics (150L) is offering a Humboldt reloaded project for the first time in the upcoming winter semester 2021/22. In project on "The smart fridge: builing a demonstrator for predictive determination of food quality", students can participate in a current research project.

Humboldt reloaded offers students the opportunity to gain active research experience already during their bachelor studies. They work independently on a research question and document their work in an abstract and poster. The Humboldt reloaded project concludes with the Humboldt reloaded annual conference, where the results of the project are presented.

The Department of Food Informatics will participate in this format of research-based teaching for the first time in the upcoming winter semester with a project on "The intelligent fridge: building a demonstrator for predictive determination of food quality".

According to a study by the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (link), approximately 12 tons of food waste are generated in the food supply chain. The reasons for its occurrence are manifold - for example, the best-before date is sometimes misunderstood and food is disposed of as a precaution. Another challenge is the timely consumption of perishable foods. Smart packaging can monitor food quality during distribution, sales and at the consumer's site. But how can intelligent systems support consumers? What components does a smart fridge need? During the project, ways to determine the food quality in real time should be explored with the help of a demonstrator.

The main goal of this project is to build a demonstrator to determine the food quality in real time and predict the shelf life. Therefore, necessary sensors have to be identified and to be integrated into a suitable experimental setup. The data of the sensors shall first be gathered locally and the consumer should get access to the data in a suitable visualization afterward.

Further information on the project and participation can be found on the Humboldt reloaded website. The application is possible from October 18 to 28, 2021 also via Humboldt reloaded.
