As part of the Dies academicus of the University of Hohenheim on July 3, 2026, Minh Quan Nguyen was awarded the Johannsen Bioeconomy Award for the outstanding concept of his master's thesis.
His thesis, entitled “Early Detection of Fungal Infection in Mandarins Using Electronic Nose Technology and Machine Learning,” addresses a highly relevant topic at the interface of food informatics and bioeconomy.
The master's thesis focuses on developing a concept for the early detection of spoilage and fungal infections in mandarins using volatile organic compounds. To this end, the electronic nose developed by the department is used in combination with machine learning methods to assess its suitability for detecting fungal infections.
In the long term, such technologies could support the early identification of quality deterioration, thereby reducing food losses and improving quality assurance processes.
